Greg has been in the construction industry for the past 40 years.
He
started in the industry installing exterior home improvements. Then
started his own business selling & installing exterior home
improvements, which expanded into other areas of construction. This gave
him experience in estimating & selling along with a better
understanding of other areas of construction.
Greg began to see the value of using computers to create estimates
using spreadsheets. Over time, he continued to grow in his experience in
estimating, construction knowledge, and managing projects, to create a
sophisticated estimating spreadsheet system in Microsoft Excel.
Eventually, the spreadsheet could not keep up with the demands of
the estimating system and the additional functionality that Greg felt
the estimating system should have. So, a new system was
designed by Greg, on the basis of the spreadsheet, but built in
Microsoft Access. That system has continued to grow as new ideas are implemented.
Because of the economy, many construction companies have had to let
some of their employees go, to reduce their overhead. In some cases,
construction companies that had many employees were reduced to mere
skeletons of their former selves. As the economy starts to improve, many
are starting to hear the phones ring and are starting to get busy, but
not to the point where they fell they can afford to add new employees to
the overhead.
That being the case, Greg thought that now was the time to share
his expertise in estimating with others by
sub-contracting
estimating on an
as-needed-basis, as is already being done in other
parts of the country, using the system he has designed.
